vinyl liner lifespan

How Long Does a Vinyl Liner Last?

Most vinyl liners last somewhere between seven and twelve years. How long yours lasts depends on sun exposure, water chemistry, how much the pool is used, and whether it has been covered over winter.

A liner that is replaced on time is a straightforward job. A liner left too long is a different conversation, because a failing liner leaks — slowly at first — and water escaping behind it can wash out the material under the floor and around the walls. That turns a liner replacement into a structural repair.

Consistent water chemistry is what gets a liner to the far end of its life rather than the near end. It is one of the reasons we offer bi-weekly and monthly service plans.

Signs Your Liner Needs Replacing

Not sure whether it’s time for a new liner? These common warning signs indicate that your liner is nearing the end of its lifespan or already failing. If you’re noticing any of these symptoms, a liner evaluation is the next step.

Fading or a washed-out pattern

Sunlight and chlorine gradually bleach vinyl. Fading is cosmetic on its own, but it is a reliable sign of age.

Wrinkles on the floor or walls

Vinyl stretches over time and stops sitting flat. Wrinkles trap dirt and are difficult to brush clean.

A brittle or stiff feel

A healthy liner is soft and flexible. One that has gone hard has lost its plasticizers, and it will tear rather than stretch.

Losing water

Evaporation is normal; a consistent daily drop is not. Water loss is the most common reason people call.

Slipping out of the track

A liner that will not stay in the coping track has usually shrunk and is near the end of its life.

Gaps or separation around fittings, steps and skimmers

The seals at the fittings are the first place a liner gives up.

Visible tears, patches or repeated patching

One patch is a repair. Several patches mean a replacement.

What’s Included in Aquarius’ Liner Replacement Service

Replacing a liner is a detailed process that requires precision, careful preparation, and proper equipment. Aquarius Pools of the Upstate handles every step with expert attention to detail.

Inspection, Measurements and Leak Detection

Assess existing liner, identify structural concerns, and take exact measurements to ensure a perfect fit. Determine if water loss is liner-related or caused by another pool component.

Liner Selection Guidance

Help choosing the right pattern, color, thickness and UV-resistant options.

Old Liner Removal

Safely remove the existing liner without damaging the surrounding pool structure.

Surface & Wall Evaluation

Examine the walls and floor for erosion and rough areas, and make minor surface corrections.

Professional Installation

Ensure smooth, wrinkle-free placement and tight, accurate alignment with all fittings.

Filling & Water Balancing

We bring the water up, balance the chemistry and check that the equipment is running as it should.

A drained pool is the easiest time to upgrade anything on the equipment pad — pumps, filters, heaters and automation are all simpler to work on while the water is out.

Choosing Your Liner

Liners are made in a wide range of patterns, usually with a tile-effect band at the waterline and a coordinating floor. Darker patterns make water look deeper and richer; lighter ones make it look bright and tropical. The pattern also changes how visible leaves and dirt are between cleans.

Liners also come in different thicknesses, measured in mils. A thicker liner costs more and stands up better to wear — worth it on a pool that gets heavy use or has a lot of steps and corners.

Vinyl liner replacement FAQs

Everything you need to know about vinyl pool liner replacement and installation. Can’t find the answer you’re looking for? Please chat with our team.
How long does a pool liner last?
Most vinyl liners last between seven and twelve years, depending on sun exposure, water chemistry, how heavily the pool is used, and whether it is covered over winter.
Can you replace a liner in winter?
Vinyl needs warmth to stretch and seat properly, so liner replacements are best done in warmer weather. In the Upstate that generally means spring through fall. We are happy to measure and schedule over winter so the work is booked for the first suitable weather.
Will you repair the floor, or just fit a new liner over it?
We repair it. The floor is exposed only once, while the old liner is out, so that is when damage and low spots get fixed. A new liner laid over an uneven floor will show every imperfection.
Are new lights and fittings included?
Yes. New gaskets, faceplates, return fittings, main drain cover and lights are fitted with the liner. Seals are what keep a liner watertight, so reusing old ones is a false economy.
Can I change the pattern?
Yes. A liner replacement is the one opportunity to change how the pool looks, and there is no extra cost in choosing a different pattern from the one you have.
Can you add a tanning ledge or steps at the same time?
Tanning ledges can be added to vinyl pools, and a liner replacement is a sensible time to do it. That is renovation work rather than a straight liner change, so we would quote it separately.
Do you replace liners on pools you didn't build?
Yes, on vinyl pools throughout the Upstate.
What areas do you cover?
Greer, Greenville, Spartanburg and the surrounding Upstate of South Carolina.
